Learning to Fly

Each year in Poland around 70,000 children and teenagers remain in the foster care system. The great majority of them have living parents – dysfunctional, addicted. The film shows the first years of the independent lives of Marietta, Michał and Ania, who were brought up in orphanages.

The film is a moving and reflective ballad on mistakes that cannot be avoided and a great belief in the power of love. The characters are full of hope that they will succeed. Marietta is about to get her own small flat. Her childhood having been spent wandering through various care homes, it is a symbolic moment for her. Michał’s biggest dream is to meet a girl and start a family, yet he keeps being rejected. Ania fights to get back her little daughters, who were put in foster care. Without any intrusive commentary, the film provides facts from the characters’ lives, showing their daily living, conversations with friends, touching moments. It asks the question: Is it possible to break free of the vicious circle of a bad childhood?
